Jim Ahler, CAE, Strategic Search Partner
Jim Ahler, CAE, has spent his career building relationships with leaders, helping organizations with his strategic advice and making connections. He brings all of these experiences and relationships to Elinvar clients. As a member of the Elinvar search team, Jim understands the leadership and business needs of the organization we are serving and applies his experience from leading and growing a successful professional association, his many board leadership roles and volunteer experiences with nonprofits and his church, to be an effective advisor and connector.
Jim joined Elinvar following his retirement as CEO of NCACPA, the NC Association of CPAs in Raleigh, NC. NCACPA is a professional membership association for Certified Public Accountants and those pursuing the credential, whose member base grew from 9,000 to over 14,000 during his tenure.
Prior to taking the position in North Carolina, Jim served as Executive Director of the Kentucky State Board of Accountancy, in Louisville, Kentucky from 1979 to 1988. Yes, Jim is a Kentucky Wildcat fan and has been known to cheer for the Louisville Cardinals.
The credential Jim holds as a Certified Association Executive was awarded by the US Chamber of Commerce to Jim in 1996 after passing a rigorous examination in association management. The credential requires re-certification. Jim is also a graduate of the Institute for Organizational Management, a six-year program, sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce.
Jim received his undergraduate degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky and completed his Master in Public Affairs at Kentucky State University.
Jim is a past president of the Association Executives of North Carolina (AENC). In June 2016, Jim was honored with the Bob Slocum Outstanding Government Affairs & Advocacy Award as well as a Lifetime Membership in Association Executives of NC.
Jim is a past President of the CPA Society Executives Association (CPA/SEA). During his career, he chaired the Strategic Planning, Emerging Issues, and Marketplace Issues Committees, before being elected to the CPA/SEA Board of Directors.
On May 1, 2016, he was honored by Governor Pat McCrory with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This award is bestowed on North Carolinians for exemplary service to the State of North Carolina which is above and beyond the call of duty and has made a significant impact and strengthened the state.
Jim is married to Sheila Ahler, CPA, a partner in the Raleigh office of Cherry Bekaert. They reside in Cary, NC and Jim’s daughter, Jenny, lives in Apex. Jim is an active member of Apex United Methodist Church in Apex, serving on the Finance Committee, the Methodist Men’s Group, and their Red Cross Volunteer Team. Jim is also supporting the Western Wake Crisis Ministry, which deals with family hunger.
