NC IDEA was a new foundation with a corpus of approximately $50,000,000 and a mission to create a robust ecosystem across NC in support of economic development and job creation through the success of entrepreneurs across the state.

Elinvar conducted a national search that resulted in the selection of a candidate from Ohio who had extensive experience as a Vice President of Entrepreneurship with Kauffman Foundation as well as direct enterpreneurial success. The search was launched in October 2015 and the CEO started in March of 2016.

— Randy Myer, Board Chair, NC Idea

“I highly recommend the Elinvar team. What made them so effective for us for the NC Idea President search was how thoroughly they vetted the candidates and gave us 5 strong candidates.  Then Patti worked with the entire board to align our profiles with the candidates and coached us on how and where issues might arise after we hired our person. Incredibly professional team.”

The John M. Belk Endowment was a newly formed family foundation, with assets in excess of $250 million, an annual operating budget of $2 million and annual grant making in excess of $10 million, Elinvar was retained to conduct the search for their initial Executive Director in December 2012. The focus of their work is to support post-secondary education success for NC students. Their initial President assumed her position in early August 2013 and continues to lead the foundation.

As a client, they have listened carefully to the criteria, skill set and personality we are striving for in the positions we have available.”

Elinvar was first retained by Karl Stauber, CEO of Danville Regional Foundation in 2012. Our first engagement was to conduct the search for a CFO and we were engaged the following year to conduct a search for their first Senior Program Officer for Health and Human Services.

In both searches, Elinvar was charged with finding very talented professionals excited to live in the Danville Region if they were not current residents. Both additions to the senior team have met with great success in fitting the culture of the foundation and the community it serves, while also bringing the desired technical skills to their positions.

Greensboro Urban Ministry engaged Elinvar in advance of the retirement of a long-standing ED. Our initial work was to conduct an in-depth assessment of the organization, including an assessment of the senior leadership team and board committees. The information we gathered during this first phase of our work was used by the board to support the leadership team during the transition, to inform Elinvar of the strengths needed in the new leader, and to assist the new ED in his successful transition.

The retiring leader had a strong brand in the community and the board was focused on ensuring a smooth transition for the staff and the community. GUM has an operating budget in excess of $4 million and close to 50 employees. The search was launched in September 2014, the slate was interviewed in January 2015 and the new leader joined GUM in June 2015 to coordinate the transition with the retiring ED.

The North Carolina Justice Center is the state’s preeminent voice for economic and social justice with the mission of eliminating poverty. They work to ensure that every household in the state has access to the resources, services and fair treatment it needs to achieve economic security. To pursue these goals, the Justice Center employs five interconnected strategies:  litigation, research and analysis, public policy advocacy, community education and engagement, and communication. Following the retirement of a long-term Executive Director, Elinvar was engaged to conduct the search to find a new Executive Director who could lead a very passionate and well informed team of advocates and justice seeking professionals and have credible experience to represent the organization’s issues and strategies across a broad range of constituents and policy leaders.

Higher Education

The case studies below highlight the work we have done for Higher Education clients.

Mike Smith, Dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – School of Government, retained Elinvar to conduct the searches for two Associate Dean positions that together lead the finances, human resources and operations for the school. With changes in funding models and growth presenting competing challenges in the near future, Dean Smith wanted the assistance of a search firm that could discern the leadership skills needed to accomplish his goals and fit the unique culture of his institution.

Elinvar conducted the searches in tandem and the faculty and staff feedback was universally positive, stating that any choice the Dean made from the finalists would be welcome additions to the leadership of the school.

Professional Associations

The case studies below highlight the work we have done for Professional Associations.

North Carolina Network of Grantmakers (NCNG) is a statewide member organization that supports all sectors of philanthropy. The search was launched in October 2012, the new ED started in May 2013 and continues in her role to date.

The International Society On Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) is a global not-for-profit membership organization advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding disorders.

The Society is dedicated to transformative scientific discoveries and clinical practices, the development of young professionals and the education of physicians, scientists and allied health professionals wherever they may live.

Thomas Reiser, Executive Director of ISTH, is leading a period of substantial growth and building infrastructure to support this growth and the ability to insource activities that have been outsourced in the past.

Elinvar was initially engaged to conduct the search for the first Director of Finance & Operations for ISTH. Following the success of this work, Tom has engaged Elinvar for several organization development projects to further prepare his leadership team for the expansion of their positions and continued growth of the association.

Elinvar’s CEO has served on numerous association boards for over 20 years. She has served in various capacities including Board Chair for local chapters of international associations. While these have all been volunteer positions, her impact has been significant and her knowledge of association operations is extensive.

ACG is probably the most noteworthy of her accomplishments. Her service began when she joined the Raleigh/Durham ACG Chapter in 2001, just as it was about to lose its charter. With no money in the bank and 5 active members, Patti rebuilt the board and with this strong team, the Chapter became a vibrant and award winning organization.

Her talents were recognized at the international level and she was recruited to join the Global board during a time of significant transition. The organization moved to its first professional Executive Director and he began building the infrastructure that now supports 14,500 members, 59 chapters and an annual international conference. Patti was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by ACG Global in 2013 in recognition of her contributions to the association.
